Perth Symphony Orchestra Presents a Spectacular Evening of Romantic Masterpieces at Perth Concert Hall

Internationally acclaimed violinist Karolina Csáthy joins conductor Sam McLellan and Perth Symphony Orchestra for an exhilarating programme of British, German and Czech orchestral favourites.

Perth Symphony Orchestra invites music lovers to an unforgettable evening of orchestral music at Perth Concert Hall on Saturday 14th November at 7.30pm, with a spectacular programme featuring some of the most thrilling and beloved works in the classical repertoire.

Under the baton of conductor Sam McLellan, with Lorna McGovern leading the orchestra, the evening promises a rich musical journey, from the dramatic landscapes of the Scottish Highlands to the lyrical beauty of Bruch’s violin writing and the magnificent melodies of Dvořák.

The concert opens with Hamish MacCunn’s stirring orchestral work ‘The Land of the Mountain and the Flood’, a wonderfully evocative celebration of Scotland’s dramatic natural landscape. Full of sweeping melodies, dramatic contrasts and powerful orchestral colour, the work captures the spirit of the Scottish countryside and provides a fitting opening to the evening.

The spotlight then turns to internationally sought-after violinist Karolina Csáthy, who will perform Max Bruch’s much-loved Violin Concerto No. 1. One of the great Romantic violin concertos, Bruch’s masterpiece is renowned for its passionate melodies, virtuosic solo writing and deeply expressive musical character.

Karolina brings an impressive international performing career to Perth. She has appeared at prestigious venues including Cadogan Hall, St Martin-in-the-Fields, Budapest Music Center, Andermatt Concert Hall and the House of Commons. Her concerto performances have included Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 with both Suffolk Sinfonia and Camden Symphony Orchestra, as well as works by Mozart, Mendelssohn and Vieuxtemps.

A graduate of Trinity College, Cambridge, where she specialised in solo violin performance, Karolina has continued her studies with Lutsia Ibragimova at the Royal College of Music. Her musical development has also included masterclasses and private tuition with distinguished artists including Maxim Vengerov, Nikita Boriso-Glebsky, Berent Korfker and Elizabeth Wallfisch.

The evening concludes with one of the great symphonic masterpieces, Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, From the New World. Written during Dvořák’s time in America, this extraordinary symphony is celebrated for its unforgettable melodies, rhythmic vitality and sweeping orchestral grandeur. From its dramatic opening to its triumphant finale, it is a work that never fails to captivate audiences.

Conductor Sam McLellan quoted “It is a real pleasure to welcome Karolina to Perth. She is not only a fantastic violinist, but a wonderfully positive and exciting musical presence, and working with her has brought a great deal to all of us in the orchestra. We’ve had another hugely enjoyable and rewarding season together, and I think audiences will hear that in our playing.

MacCunn’s The Land of the Mountain and the Flood opens the concert with all the warmth and great tunes of a Romantic overture, but with a distinctly Scottish flavour. Karolina then takes centre stage for Bruch’s Violin Concerto, virtuosic and profound in equal measure, before we finish with Dvořák’s Ninth Symphony, From the New World. There may be a surprise or two thrown into the mix, too…

Dvořák’s Ninth is a difficult symphony to write a press release about. Almost everything that can be said about this masterpiece has already been, and probably rather better! If you’ve never heard it, you’re in for a real treat. And if you have, then you’ll already know why you ought to come and hear it again!”Together, these three works offer a wonderful contrast of musical styles and emotions, celebrating the power of the orchestra and the extraordinary range of the classical repertoire.”

With an internationally acclaimed soloist, an exciting programme and the musical leadership of Sam McLellan and Lorna McGovern, Perth Symphony Orchestra promises an evening not to be missed.
